Caution in the Attorney General’s Office should leave Bolsonaro’s complaint for after the electionsValter Campanato/Agência Brasil – 10/18/2023

The leadership of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) intends to analyze the report of the  Federal Police (PF) in the jewelry investigation after the elections in October, to ensure that a possible accusation that puts former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the dock does not disrupt the election. The information is from the column of journalist Malu Gaspar, from the newspaper O Globo.

Interlocutors of the Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, informed that there is an informal deadline to decide whether the complaints against the former president and allies involved will be accepted.

In this way, say Gonet’s aides, if he does not denounce Bolsonaro, Mauro Cid and company by August 16, which is when the campaigns begin, he will only do so after the result of the second round. In the words of an ally of the PGR, without “haste”.

Gonet’s fear is that, in the event of an eventual accusation, his decision will be interpreted as “politicking”, since he took office on Lula’s nomination, with the behind-the-scenes lobbying of ministers Gilmar Mendes and Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) – that is, three of the main opponents of the Bolsonarist leadership and supporters.

According to the STF’s internal regulations, the PGR has a period of 15 days from the receipt of the final report to decide whether to accept the complaint or not. However, in addition to the deadline that will coincide with the recess of the Judiciary, the PGR itself evaluates that this deadline is “improper”, that is, not mandatory, because the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office is the holder of the criminal action.

Nowadays, the STF has three open investigations that could make Bolsonaro a defendant: the investigation into the illegal sale of Saudi jewelry, the falsification of Covid vaccination cards and the investigation into the attempted coup d’état.

Bolsonaro indicted

Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was indicted on Thursday (4) for embezzlement (appropriation of public assets), criminal association and money laundering in the jewelry investigation. The Federal Police forwarded the report with details of the crimes to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF, rapporteur of the case.

According to PF investigations, the former president received the jewels from Saudi leaders during his term and began trading them in the United States in June 2022.
